Seven

We kept to ourselves for the remainder of the day. Honestly, I don’t think I’d said a word to anyone else there for the reunion since I’d met Vic.

We grabbed our food and took it down by the water. We’d sat on the dock, our legs swinging off the edge as we’d eaten hot dogs, chips, and some sort of potato salad with chunks of olives and peppers in it.

When everyone started packing up to get ready for the dance at the Hilton, we gathered our belongings, headed back to Vic’s rental car, and drove back to our hotel.

“What are you thinking?” Vic asked as we got onto the elevator. “Do you want to go to the dance tonight?”

“What’ll we do if we don’t go to the dance?” I asked, looking up at him coyly.

“Well,” he began, “We could either go out to dinner, stay inside and cuddle while watching television, or pretend we’re teenagers again and head to the bowling alley.”

I thought about the choices, then grinned and said, “Bowling alley.”

Vic chuckled and replied, “Bowling it is.”

I laughed happily, excited to be doing something fun and out of character. Not just for the LA assistant to the stars I’d made up, but to the actual me, Molly Murphy, who hadn’t been bowling in probably eleven years.

We split up to get changed, then met up again, but this time, we walked to the Bowling Alley, which was right in town.

The evening light was getting low as Vic took my hand and we meandered the streets toward our destination. The air was sweet with the perfume of budding flowers, and there was a buzz of excitement as the small town came to life.

“Are you a good bowler?” I asked as he held the door open so I could walk inside.

Vic shrugged and said, “Not really.”

“Good,” I replied with a puff of breath. “Because I’m pretty sure I’m terrible.”

“No pressure,” he assured me as we approached the counter. “Let’s just have fun.”

Once our shoes were paid for, we went in search of our lane. Vic keyed in our names while I put on the classic blue and white shoes and started looking through the available balls for one that fit my fingers, but wasn’t too heavy.

My name flashed on the screen first, so I took my ball and positioned myself on the lane.

Bam, boom, bounce… gutter ball.

I grinned sheepishly at Vic while I waited for the ball to return, then went up and did it all over again.

Bam, boom, bounce… gutter ball.

I took my seat and tried unsuccessfully not to stare at Vic’s ass as he took his turn.

I failed, and realized it when I heard him say, “Just lucky.”

“What?” I asked, lifting my gaze up to see him grinning down at me.

“Were you staring at my ass?” he asked.

“No,” I lied, then asked, “Can you repeat what you said?”

“I said, I was just lucky,” Vic repeated, then pointed up at the screen.

He’d gotten a strike.

“Oh,” I said, standing to take my turn.
